What should I expect after getting dental implants?

Lily O'Reilly

Dental implants are a popular and effective solution for replacing missing teeth, offering a long-lasting and natural-looking result. If you’re considering dental implants, you may be wondering what to expect during the healing process and the steps involved. At Mermaid Dental Studio, while we don’t place the implants in-house, we work closely with a trusted specialist oral surgeon to ensure you receive the highest level of care throughout your journey.

Here’s what you can expect after getting dental implants:

1. Consultation and Referral to the Oral Surgeon

The process begins with a thorough consultation at our practice, where we’ll assess your overall oral health and determine if dental implants are the right option for you. Once we confirm that you’re a suitable candidate, we’ll refer you to one of our experienced oral surgeons for the placement of the implant.

2. The Implant Procedure

The oral surgeon will place the dental implant, which typically involves a small incision in the gum to expose the jawbone. The implant itself, made of biocompatible titanium, is then placed into the bone where the tooth root would normally be. Over time, the implant will fuse with the bone through a process called osseointegration, ensuring it becomes a stable foundation for your new tooth.

3. Healing and Aftercare

After the implant is placed, there is a healing period of a few months. During this time, your gums will heal, and the implant will integrate with the bone. You may experience some discomfort, swelling, or bruising during the initial recovery phase, but this is normal. Your oral surgeon will provide specific aftercare instructions, including how to manage any post-operative discomfort and when to follow up.

4. Final Restoration

Once the implant has fully integrated into the bone and your gums have healed, you will return to our practice for the final step: placing the crown or restoration on top of the implant. We’ll take impressions or scans of your mouth in the first appointment to create a custom-made crown that matches the size, shape, and colour of your natural teeth. The crown will be securely attached to the implant on your 2nd appointment, completing your new smile.

5. Long-Term Care

After your dental implant is fully restored, it’s essential to maintain proper oral hygiene to keep your implant and surrounding gums healthy. Regular check-ups with our team will ensure your implant is functioning well and that your oral health remains in top condition.

Dental implants can offer a permanent and natural-looking solution for missing teeth, and with proper care, they can last a lifetime.
